Do You Need an Architect, Interior Designer or Both for a UK Renovation?

A substantial renovation can affect both the building and the interior. An architect and an interior designer may therefore work on the same project, but their appointments are not interchangeable.

In the UK, the title architect is protected by law. Only an individual registered with the Architects Registration Board may use it in business or practice. The title interior designer is not regulated in the same way, so clients must compare the scope, evidence and responsibilities behind each proposal.

The short answer

Start with the size of the property and the extent of change. Larger or technically complex projects create more interfaces between structure, services, ceilings, circulation, kitchens, joinery and construction sequencing.

  • Consider appointing a registered architect when the project involves major changes to the building, an extension or new home, planning strategy, external alterations or architectural information for statutory and construction purposes.
  • Use an interior designer for internal spatial planning, kitchens, bathrooms, fitted joinery, lighting intent, materials, furniture and the coordination of how the completed interior will function and feel.
  • Appoint both early when architectural changes and a detailed whole-home interior need to be developed together.

This is a guide to choosing the team, rather than a legal requirement to appoint an architect for every renovation. ARB confirms that architectural services can be provided by people who are not registered architects; assess competence, insurance and the agreed responsibilities for the work.

What does a registered architect do?

Depending on the written appointment, an architect may analyse the site and building, develop the architectural concept, prepare planning information, coordinate Building Regulations information and work with structural and building-services engineers. These services are not automatic: the appointment must state the work stages, deliverables, exclusions and level of construction involvement.

What does an interior designer do?

Interior design can extend far beyond decoration. For a substantial residential project, the scope may include internal space planning, kitchens and connected living spaces, bathrooms, ceilings, lighting intent, bespoke cabinetry, material specification, furniture, realistic 3D visualisation, schedules, procurement and agreed design reviews during installation.

The title alone does not guarantee that every service is included. Compare the written scope, comparable work, qualifications, insurance and responsibility for technical coordination.

What about the term interior architect?

The British Institute of Interior Design advises that, in a UK business or professional context, a person should not call themselves an interior architect unless they are entitled to use the protected title architect and are registered with ARB.

Terms such as interior architecture and architecture-led interior design may describe work focused on internal space, circulation and fixed elements. They do not establish that the provider is a registered architect.

When should you appoint both?

Early collaboration is especially valuable for new homes, extensions centred on kitchen and living spaces, whole-home renovations with structural alterations, heritage properties and projects with complex lighting, services, joinery or bespoke manufacture.

It can prevent conflicts such as a structural grid compromising the kitchen layout, service routes reducing ceiling heights, or doors and windows restricting furniture and joinery. The aim is to assign each decision to the appropriate professional and resolve the interfaces.

Who is responsible for structure and approvals?

Structural design should be carried out by an appropriately qualified and appointed structural engineer or other competent professional. An architect or interior designer may coordinate the spatial implications, but should not be assumed to provide structural calculations.

Planning and Building Regulations responsibilities also depend on the written appointments. Ask who prepares each submission, who supplies supporting technical information, who responds to the authority and which surveys and fees sit outside the appointment.

How should the work be divided?

A responsibility schedule should record who leads, contributes to, approves and issues each part of the project. Include room layouts, structural openings, doors and windows, ceiling and service zones, kitchens, bathrooms, lighting, joinery, materials, statutory submissions, procurement, site reviews, snagging and handover.

How does Meiger fit into the team?

Meiger is a Cheshire interior-design studio working across luxury kitchens, connected living spaces and complete home interiors. Its agreed scope can include spatial planning, bespoke cabinetry, material specification, lighting design and realistic 3D visualisation, as well as procurement, installation and coordination through to completion. The written appointment sets out Meiger’s responsibilities for delivery, installation, final checks, snagging and handover, so clients understand how the design will be carried through to the finished interior.

Where a project requires a registered architect, structural engineer, building-services designer or another regulated specialist, that role should be separately identified and coordinated. Meiger's use of architecture-led interior design describes a design method; it is not a claim that Michael Moran or Meiger is a registered architect.

What type of projects does Meiger undertake?

Meiger residential interior project in Formby

Meiger most often works on new-build homes and medium to large-scale residential projects, where decisions about internal architecture, kitchens, lighting, services, materials and bespoke joinery benefit from being coordinated early.

The studio has also completed selected renovation projects for discerning private clients in Cheshire and Liverpool. In these commissions, the existing building is assessed alongside the client’s brief so that retained architecture, structural changes and new interior elements can be developed as one coherent scheme. The appropriate architect, engineer and other specialists are identified according to the scope of each project.

Appointing the right team early allows architecture, kitchens, lighting, materials and furniture to be coordinated before construction decisions become expensive to change.

Frequently asked questions

Do I legally need an architect for every UK renovation?

No. UK law protects the title architect, but does not generally require every renovation to employ one. The appropriate team depends on the proposed work, approvals, competence and contractual responsibilities.

Can an interior designer lead a whole-home renovation?

An interior designer may lead an agreed interior scope, but structural engineering, planning, Building Regulations, fire safety and building services may require separately appointed professionals.

Should the architect or interior designer be appointed first?

Where a project affects both the building and a detailed whole-home interior, appointing both early is usually more valuable than bringing one in after major decisions have been fixed.

How can I verify a registered architect?
